First Showing - Tyrone Deans: Here Because You Were There

Come and celebrate the opening of an amazing new exhibition from acclaimed South London artist, Tyrone Deans!

Here Because You Were There  comprises of alluring compositions influenced by Deans' Jamaican and British heritage, work which is layered both symbolically and physically through the use of salt, butter, paint and Ghanaian Kente Fabric, creating a space to acknowledge history and reflection on oneself.

The paintings in the show are deliberately material and inquisitive, exploring concepts of identity, culture, and class with every layer applied to the surface. Deans wields mixed media purposefully, integrating elements such as Ghanaian Kente fabric and found historical documents to drive conversation beyond formalism. As colourful as they are complex, Deans’ paintings are inviting and open-ended by nature acknowledging that history is formed by both those who have power and those without, and that both sides are of equal importance to remember and understand.

Deans is a chartered architect balancing a fine art practice from his studio in Jamaica. Born into a Jamaican family, Deans was raised in Streatham.

Inheritance by Tyrone Deans

Tyrone Deans studied Architecture in London at Kingston, London Metropolitan and RIBA NW universities.

His work creates alluring compositions influenced by his Jamaican and British heritage, combining layers of mixed media with bursts of colour to develop unique and expressive material that explores issues of race, culture and class.

Experience and identity primarily shape Deans’ practice, which funds his exceptional, unique narratives on these multifaceted topics.

The often regional themes in Tyrone Deans’ works have in common the artist’s fascination with the relationship between people, places and cultures.

With its emphasis on layer rich canvasses which provide a setting for paint and natural elements to come together, his paintings can be seen as a kind of urban abstract expressionism, deeply rooted in his responses towards growing up in a Jamaican family in London.
