An intergenerational storytelling workshop exploring how communication and stories have changed through time - from letters to texts to social media.
The phrase "every object tells a story" is not quite true because it forgets that it is not the object but us that tell the story. And the story we tell is often only half known. We must guess, infer, fill in, read between the lines to make the story come alive.
In this workshop, storyteller Phil Okwedy shares extracts from a series of love letters that were written and sealed in Nigeria and opened and read in Wales as an invitation for you to share the story of an object that is precious to you. So, whether it is a suitcase, a watch, a letter, a photograph or any object that holds a meaning for you, please bring it along and let’s share our stories together.
As this is an intergenerational storytelling workshop, it is suitable for ages 18-25 years olds as well as 50+ year olds. The workshop will work best with a mix of people of different ages, so we will be capping the number of people from each age group to ensure a good mixture. This workshop is a pre-cursor to Phil Okwedy’s one-man performance, The Gods Are All Here, performed for the first and only time in London on Wednesday, 1st November 2023.

Artist Bio:
Phil Okwedy is a Pembrokeshire-based writer and storyteller featured as a ‘New Directions’ artist at Beyond the Border Wales International Storytelling Festival in 2021. He was a commissioned storyteller for National Theatre Wales’ Go Tell the Bees project, and is currently writing a book based on The Gods Are All Here as part of Literature Wales’ Representing Wales, Developing Writers of Colour programme. Phil’s first book, Wil & the Welsh Black Cattle, is a brilliant collection of Welsh folktales framed around the mythology of the ancient cattle drovers.
